Takehito Etani invents fantastical wearable devices and installations that he refers to as spiritual prosthetics. He explores the relationships between body, consciousness and technology in contemporary daily life. His subtly humorous performances with such devices are intended as both social critique and a vision of a future alternative reality.

Selected exhibitions and installation venues featuring his work include the ISEA (International Symposium of Electronic Art), San Jose, California, VIPER Basel Festival for Film, Video and New Media, Switzerland, and the Stuttgarter Filmwinter Festival for Expanded Media, Germany, as well as Taro Okamoto Memorial Museum, Kawasaki, Japan, as a nominee for The 7th Taro Okamoto Memorial Award for Contemporary Art.

Etani's work has been featured in media art publications such as "See Yourself Sensing: Redefining Human Perception" by Madeline Schwartzman and "Art + Science Now" by Stephen Wilson.

He received his BFA from Pratt Institute in 2003, his MFA from Carnegie Mellon University in 2006, and attended the Skowhegan School of Painting and Sculpture in the summer of 2006.

Etani was born in Japan and lives and works in Oakland, California.
